Most towing companies will not tell you where their trucks actually are. We will. Imperial Towing runs out of Melbourne, and Sebastian sits about 22 miles south of us in Indian River County. That is roughly half an hour on a normal day and longer if US 1 or I-95 is snarled. We work this town often enough that our operators are not learning the roads on your call, and 28 years in the trade means the truck that shows up knows what it is doing. But half an hour is half an hour, and you deserve to hear that before you decide.

So here is the honest version. If you are somewhere merely inconvenient, a parking lot, a driveway, a side street with room, call us and we will come get you. If you are in real danger, sitting in a live lane, in rising water, hurt, on a bridge span with traffic moving past you, then call 911 first and take whoever can physically reach you soonest. A truck twenty minutes closer is the right truck in that moment, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Right now, before anybody drives anywhere

Hazards on. Then the question that shapes everything else: does the car still roll and steer? If it does, use it. Get off US 1 or CR 512 and into a lot, a side road, a boat ramp entrance, anywhere off the pavement. Once you are clear of the travel lane, the emergency is largely over and the rest is just waiting.

If it will not move, look before you unbuckle

Where you stand is the whole safety decision. If there is a shoulder, a grass verge, or a lot you can reach on foot, everyone gets out through the doors on the side away from traffic, walks back behind the car, and gets well off the pavement. Behind the vehicle, never in front of it, and never into the gap between the car and a guardrail.

If there is nowhere to go, and around the inlet bridge or on a narrow stretch of 512 that is a real possibility, stay belted inside with the hazards on. Standing in a live lane is worse than sitting in a car that is at least visible. Call 911 so a deputy can shield the scene, then reach us at (321) 499-4610. Boat trailers change the call

Sebastian traffic carries a lot of trailers. Fishing boats headed for the inlet, trailers coming back loaded and wet, rigs that handle differently full than they did empty. Two things follow from that. First, tell the dispatcher there is a trailer and roughly what it weighs, because it changes which truck leaves the yard and it is the difference between one trip and two. Second, do not try to muscle a jackknifed rig straight yourself on a shoulder with traffic going by. Get everyone out, well back and away from the trailer, and wait. A loaded trailer beside a live lane is not something to solve with a strap and good intentions.

What dispatch asks

Four things. What you are driving, and whether anything is hooked to it. Where you are. Whether the wheels roll and steer. Whether anyone is injured or the vehicle is sitting in a live lane. That is enough to send the right truck with the right urgency.

For location out here, forget street numbers. Give us the road, the last cross street, and the direction you were traveling. US 1, CR 512, Roseland Road. Then name something you can see: a boat ramp, a church, a store sign, the bridge. Some of the roads at the north end of town run without shoulder lighting and with a real drop into the swale off the edge of the pavement. Pleasant in daylight, unpleasant at eleven at night with a dead car. Keep the hazards on, keep the dome light on if the battery allows, stand away from the driver’s door rather than beside it, and hold a phone flashlight up when you see the truck slowing. The operator lights the entire scene before he touches anything, because working blind next to a lane is how people get hurt.

Water on the road

Storms here put water across low sections quickly, and the rule is short. If your engine has already stalled in standing water, do not crank it. Not once, not to check. A flooded engine that gets turned over stops being a tow and starts being a rebuild. Get out to dry ground, call us, and tell the dispatcher roughly how deep the water looked so the operator brings the right reach.
