Geography Turns A Bad Morning Into A Long One.

Almost every ordinary breakdown call we take here has a second problem stacked on top of the first one. The alternator quit, fine, that happens everywhere. But the car is on an island with the Indian River on one side and the Banana River on the other, the driver’s shop is on the mainland, and the person now has to figure out how they personally get across a causeway.

That is the part most towing companies do not think about and the part that actually shapes the phone call. So we ask early. Where is the car going, and how are you getting home. Shift work at the space center

A large share of Merritt Island leaves for work while it is still dark and gets home after dark. Kennedy Space Center, the contractors, the port operations across the water: those schedules do not line up with anybody’s shop hours. So the breakdowns cluster at hours when a lot of tow companies quietly stop picking up the phone.

Courtenay Parkway and the 520 corridor

Two roads generate most of what we see. Courtenay Parkway runs the length of the island and carries everybody, and a car that quits on it stops a lane in a place where there is not much room to get around. SR-520 is the crossing artery, busy in both directions, and a stall on it during the afternoon push is felt by several hundred people at once.

If the car dies on either of them, the first move is space. Get to the shoulder or a plaza entrance if the vehicle will still coast that far. If it will not, hazards on and stay in the car with your belt fastened while traffic is moving. People get hurt standing beside a disabled vehicle far more often than they get hurt inside one. Then call, and say the road and the nearest signal.

The causeway is part of the price

This is what makes Merritt Island different from a landlocked town in the county. Almost any repair destination involves crossing water, so distance is a real variable rather than a rounding error. A move to a shop on the island and a run across to Melbourne or Rockledge are genuinely different jobs.

Which is why we say the number up front, with the crossing in it. One price covering the whole trip, not a local tow rate that grows a mileage line once the car is already on the deck. Boat trailers, driveways, and cars that have not moved

Plenty of what we haul off this island is not an emergency at all. A tow vehicle that quit at a ramp with a trailer behind it. A second car in a driveway that stopped running two summers ago and needs to be gone before a closing. A truck that has been sitting under a carport since somebody stopped driving.

Trailers matter to mention. We cannot move a vehicle with a trailer still hitched, so that becomes two jobs and you should know it on the phone rather than in the parking lot. And for cars that have sat, tell us whether the wheels still roll and whether there is a clear path out to somewhere a truck can park. Flat tires and seized brakes do not stop us. A tree three feet from the driveway edge might change the approach.

When the job needs a different truck

If the vehicle cannot be dragged on two wheels, all-wheel drive, low clearance, a locked wheel, a car you are unwilling to risk, that is flatbed towing in Merritt Island.
