Parking garages are where cars love to quit. You shut the engine off, run your errand, come back, and nothing. A dead battery, a starter that picked today, an immobilizer having a moment. On a normal street this is a routine call. Three floors up a concrete ramp with a 6-foot-8 clearance bar at the entrance, it becomes a puzzle, because the truck that would normally come get you cannot physically fit inside the building.

Why a normal tow truck cannot come get you
A standard flatbed sits somewhere around 11 to 12 feet tall with its lights and headboard. Even a light-duty wrecker usually clears 8 feet or more. Most parking structures post clearances between 6-foot-6 and 7 feet, and the real number at the ramp transitions is often a few inches less than the sign says. The math simply does not work.
What happens when a company without the right equipment takes the call anyway? We have seen all of it: trucks wedged at the entrance, crews trying to push a dead car down three levels of ramp by hand, and drivers told to “get it to the ground floor and call us back,” as if the car being dead was a scheduling problem.
How a low-clearance recovery actually works
The right way is purpose-built equipment. We bring in a low-profile unit that fits under the clearance bar, gets to your level, and moves the car with dollies or a compact wheel-lift built for tight spaces.
- We confirm the garage details first. Which structure, which level, which row, and the posted clearance. A photo of the entrance bar helps.
- The unit that rolls out is chosen for the building, not just the car. That is the whole reason this works.
- Tight columns, painted floors, and short turns get respected. Garages are unforgiving, and a rushed job leaves marks on the car or the building.
- Once the car is out at street level, it goes onto a conventional flatbed if it needs a longer ride to the shop.
What you can do while you wait
Note your level and the nearest stair or elevator core, stay with the vehicle if the garage feels safe, and give dispatch the garage name rather than just the street address. Buildings often have multiple entrances, and the difference between the north and south entry can be ten minutes of circling. If the car is in a paid structure, let the attendant know a tow is coming; most garages deal with us often enough that the process is smooth.
