The wobble every RV owner has felt
If you have ever pulled a travel trailer down I-95 and felt the back of the truck start a slow fishtail as a semi blew past, you know the feeling. Most owners call it sway and treat it like weather, something that just happens. It is not. Sway is physics, it has causes, and every one of those causes can be handled before the trailer moves a foot.

What actually causes sway
A travel trailer pivots on the ball. Anything that lets the trailer’s mass swing that pivot faster than the tow vehicle can damp it turns into oscillation. The usual suspects:
- Not enough tongue weight. This is the big one. A trailer loaded tail-heavy carries too little of its weight on the hitch, and the geometry goes unstable. Ten to fifteen percent of the trailer’s weight belongs on the tongue.
- A mismatched or worn hitch. The wrong ball height tilts the trailer, shifts the axle loading, and invites the wobble.
- Loads that move. Water tanks half full, gear loose inside, bikes hanging off the rear bumper. Weight that shifts mid-corner amplifies every input.
- Speed and wind. Sway force grows with speed. The gust off a passing semi is often just the trigger for a setup that was marginal all along.
How a professional haul is different
When we move a trailer, the setup is the job. We weigh the situation before we tow: how the trailer is loaded, where the tanks sit, what the tongue is actually carrying. We run the correct ball and height, weight-distribution bars when the load calls for them, sway control matched to the trailer, and a brake controller dialed to the trailer’s brakes rather than left on whatever the last job used. Then we drive it like freight, steady speed, long following distances, no sudden inputs.
None of this is secret knowledge. It is just discipline, applied every single time, which after 28 years is a habit we could not break if we tried.
